Anabolic Effects: Prolotherapy For Ligaments And Tendon Injuries

At Anabolic Effects we focus on all aspects of fitness, training, supplementation and in this case therapy. Anything that can help us go further, reach higher, move faster, lift more, etc. matters to us. This leads me to this article on Prolotherapy. So I got hurt almost two weeks ago while doing tabada push presses at the Mahoney CrossFit gym in Salem, Oregon. Today, when the issue was not improving. I went to see my incredible doctor Matthew West. We discussed the role of inflamation in pain and healing and he confirmed some of the new information that I have been learning about at Mind and Muscle in this thread titled Circumin, NSAID’s and Tedinopathy.

We discussed the options at which point Dr. West said that he believed Prolotherapy would be the best choice for me if I don’t have resolution in the next few days after several Lidocaine injections totaling about 10cc’s. He described that Prolotherapy is the process of injecting affected tendons and ligaments with a dextrose solution which produces inflammation in the weak and injured areas, thereby increasing blood supply and nutrients to the injured area (specifically depositing new collagen) helping it to heal itself. This new collagen shrinks as it ages thereby tightening the ligament that was treated making it stronger.

Historical review shows that a version of this technique was first used by Hippocrates on soldiers with dislocated, torn shoulder joints. He would stick a hot poker into the joint, and it would then miraculously heal normally. Of course, we don’t use hot pokers today, but the principle is similar—get the body to repair itself, an innate ability that the body has”

This seemed to be in line with much of the thoughts that are described in the thread linked above. Inflammation hurts but inflammation is necessary when your injured does not help you in the long run and does work towards resolving the source of the pain and inflammation itself. I trust this doctor like no doctor I have ever seen before. After all that I have been reading and what I am reading about Prolotherapy, I am convinced that we need to learn how to make inflammation our friend and not treat it like an enemy.
